Free Hugs!

Saturday, June 14, 2008
Dedicated to Fidsy, who became the mother of PTEB free hugs campaign ^_^
And to Kaka Naja, who got a free hug by a Japanese in Shibuya, Tokyo. (It was in Wiki too!)

Basically, it all started from a Youtube video (the one above) starring Juan Mann. Please read this man's story in which I got in http://www.freehugsguide.org/.

"The Free Hugs Campaign is an international kindness initiative, that has spread to over 80 countries around the world, founded on the simple principle of offering a stranger a hug.

The Free Hugs Campaign began on Wednesday June 30th, 2004 in an effort to cheer up one person’s day. Mine.

The Free Hugs Campaign is about many things, like making someone’s day a little brighter, meeting people and showing the world that strangers aren’t so bad after all. It’s also about bringing people together and sharing a happy moment before heading back out into the world feeling a little lighter.

The Free Hugs Campaign is all about people being there for each other.

When you’re feeling sad and alone in the world, it helps to talk to people, to share a laugh with someone, to see someone smile at you, to have somebody wrap their arms around you and reassure you that everything will be alright.

What about those people who don’t have somebody? Whose families live far away? Whose friends just don’t understand?

Once upon a time that was me.

I’d been living in London when my world turned upside down and I’d had to come home. By the time my plane landed back in Sydney, all I had left was a carry on bag full of clothes and a world of troubles. No one to welcome me back, no place to call home. I was a tourist in my hometown.

Standing there in the arrivals terminal, watching other passengers meeting their waiting friends and family, with open arms and smiling faces, hugging and laughing together, I wanted someone out there to be waiting for me. To be happy to see me. To smile at me. To hug me.

So I got some cardboard and a marker and made a sign. I found the busiest pedestrian intersection in the city and held that sign aloft, with the words “Free Hugs” on both sides.

And for 15 minutes, people just stared right through me. The first person who stopped, tapped me on the shoulder and told me how her dog had just died that morning. How that morning had been the one year anniversary of her only daughter dying in a car accident. How what she needed now, when she felt most alone in the world, was a hug. I got down on one knee, we put our arms around each other and when we parted, she was smiling.

Everyone has problems and for sure mine haven’t compared. But to see someone who was once frowning, smile even for a moment, is worth it every time."

How I started history: The Equinox COMIC CONTEST

Thursday, June 12, 2008
Those of you might have heard of The Equinox COMIC CONTEST. That groovy new contest that just popped out of nowhere...

Here's the story: It all started when PTEB reached second place in the Badminton Tournament, and the first few things The Flying Monkey Mina talked about was "I want an apprentice for Equinox!"

Mina had gained popularity as the creator of PTE Fight Skool comic strip for the newsletter that will eventually become one of the most controversial topics ever debated. However, the Flying Monkey is strong willed! She kept on drawing random comic strips until the chance of retirement arrives.

So I brought up the idea that we should start a new kind of cool contest to find a suitable heir ofr her in conjunction with the Equinox Essay writing and Logo design contest. A contest that will give opportunities for inspirational artists to present their work. Thus, the first ever Comic Contest was born.

"The Armored Bear"

It's amazing how much we can do if we simply asked! With permission from Ms Maday, the teacher-in-charge of the Equinox Newsletter, and some advertising designs, I was able to bring the Equinox Comic Contest to fruitation. Thanks to Ms Maday for her suggestion of some spots to post the ads and using coloured paper to attract readers.

"The Flying Monkey"

Though the Flying Monkey was there to help, I was placed as the sole organiser of the Contest. You'll find me in a number of occasions to moderate the entries in the libary (so far, around 10 entries. Enough to pick a winner). It was great to see some works that are going for the win, juniors and seniors alike.

One of the few ideas I did was to post SAMPLES to give the participants an idea of how to present it. I used different styles to make each SAMPLE AD unique thought it is signed by the same artist.

"No Fear"

My first one was an action scene in Rugby. I thought it would not go well with the Vice Principal due to its brutish look, but it was stamped and signed eventually, giving way to the first introduction to the Comic Contest.
A rough draft of my work. Better still, I'd leave it this way because I prefer it messy than absolutely clean. The Rugby field gets down and dirty alot! ~ Armored Bear

Everyone I drew it, blowing any chance to hide my Armored Bear persona. So here's a shocker to all of you! I also drew the second one.

"The Lady of my Sunshine"

Most of the people in PTEB never realised this. Maybe because I drew it in a more simplified style and cleaned it up before I posted them. I think the real reason was the fact that I drew a love themed comic which is very difficult to relate me to.
I enjoy novel-like comic books. They tend to force you to read every word, bit by bit instead of of scanning through the pictures. ~ Armored Bear

With a little help with the photoshop, I was able to put some dialogue ^_^

I was inspired to draw the third one when I had the Blankets graphic novel. It's been a big idea I had for months. It was a perfect time to release it though. The 2005 tobacco act had taken effect and it was good chance to get some winning impressions.
"Life as an unending line"

This one was exclusive for the 40th Equinox edition. Surprisingly, this issue became a hit as it provided more visuals in it. Either it was because of Mina's Exam Tips comic strip, or is it the Anti-Smoking Ad that was the final advertisement for the Contest? Either way, we gained more profits last Saturday compared to any other days. Until now, it's still puzzling ^_^
I like looking through the pages of graphic novels for symbolisms. They usually require a deep insight on the page itself. Using smoke as a metaphor for life can make any Anti-smoking Ad look interesting. ~ Armored Bear

Thanks to Wiseman, for inking and not make it into anotehr boring poster.

The Equinox Comic Contest will end this Saturday. I can't wait to see the best ones out. I don't even know what the prizes are..

The slogan for this year's Comic Contest:
"So what are you waiting for?"

Seems another Contest popped up out of nowhere too. The Photography contest ^_^

Got in an argument with one of the teachers that resulted in fisticuffs. So yeah, I'm sorry everyone, but I'm being expelled and moved to MD. I'm gonna miss you guys, ok?

No, of course not! I'm just kidding you guys ^_^

Tomorrow, just to let everyone know, Zani and I will driving to Maktab Duli to check out their rugby team.

Yeah, THEIR rugby team. I heard about it from Waz aka Crossman and are one of those training some of those new boys that are interested in joining. So I told him that I'll be coming and maybe help them with the training.

So, friends from MD. I'll see you then ^_^

A Beautiful Friendship

Sorry to Dan and Nas. I had to post it.

It was fun sitting down during sociology and see Nas and Dan talk. It always reminds me that even in the event of trouble, these two are always there to comfort each other.

Not that their like Yin Yang. Strictly they are brother and sister. The Best Damn brother sister relationship I've ever seen.

They confide things to each other and I listen. Not eavesdropping, but listening to how much they trust each other.

The Happiest Day of my Life is in 2nd June 2008

1

"Being old and fifty is a wonderful thing," said Mr. Kendrew, a large tall man with enough wisdom to become village chief if he wanted too. His curly hair was visibly fading. The woodland brown losing itself to white.

Showing a hint of delight in his face as the cake was carried to him, we wonder if Mr. Kendrew ever had a surprise celebration like this before. Thinking that is too obvious to answer, since the man is one of the most inspiring teachers to whoever crossed his path, we threw the thought and we were happy enough to be there to celebrate his golden Jubilee.

"Ah, yes. It is a golden jubilee isn't it?" and Mr. Kendrew laughed.

Alan Kendrew, the funniest tutor in PTEB. Knighted as Sir Alan by his students, of which to them felt he deserves it.

Soft chocolate fudge cake coated in chocolate icing. Decorated with white and pink flowers, and a big HAPPY 50 on it.

It was Farah (right)'s mom after all who made the cake.

The girls planned it all this time.

Did I mention I love CHEESE, STRAWBERRY, and MILK flavors? ^_^

"This is the happiest day of my life!" cried out Nisa, who was on a diet before she munched on a chocolate cake.

We had to ask. Would Mr. Kendrew, finally had reach 50, keep reminiscing about the past and his youthful days? Looking as if images of a once young Alan Kendrew is streaming through his mind, he gently took off his glasses and slightly placed them on to the table.

"No" he said. "Some might not get the chance of being fifty. Others are proud to get old and live long enough to see their grandchildren". Everyone was smiling widely "In fact, I am one of those fortunate."

2

I sat in front of the PC and while blogging my previous post and waiting to leave for training with the Bandar Blacks, I thought about the number of days that I recall having the happiest day of my life. I believe the happiest day would have to come in large numbers. I mean there's...
. The day I was born
. The day I had my first discman
. The day I found my calling in Rugby
. The day I had my first electric guitar
. The day I had the Dime-o-flage
. The day I had As in my examination results

..and so on and so forth.

Is there really a true 'Happiest day'? Would it be your initiation to adulthood, or your first lover? Maybe it's the idea of the impossibility of achieving that special thought. I explained to my mom, it's like doing something you could never imagined or something happened to you that you never imagined.

Like going to Japan. Years ago I never thought of going there, nor believing that there is a slight possibility of traveling there. And just months ago, I was able to walk around the land of the rising sun to see the cherry blossoms.

What happened today, happened so quick like the fall of sakura petals.

"Zi, you should see the Tucson! It's really beautiful! Cool man!" cried out Zani from the door. My thoughts were interrupted by the engine running, reminding me that today is the day mom and dad was bringing home the third car. I hurriedly finished blogging and ran to see the Hyundai Tucson.

Like the fall of sakura petals, disbelief came right away after the shock. To the point where I could not contain myself, I fell to the ground in tears.
Because it was not the Tucson that was in front of me, but the Hyundai Coupe instead. I thought about the hardships my mom went through, and how difficult it is for my dad to take care of all of us at once. I thought about how did we deserve a present like this.

In the midst of being over joyous, mom revealed to both of us that while Zani and I are oblivious of the car, all of them including my little sister Aira planned it to be a surprise under the guise of getting an SUV.

On the list of Happiest days of my life, mom was there to see it all and done it all for us. The trip to Japan, the PSP, The Dime-o-flage.. How can I forget it was my mom, who went through great pains to bring us up into this world, who was always there for everyone of us, her children.

I love you mom ^_^
