Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince: Review

Thursday, July 16, 2009
I haven't done a movie review for a long time so bear with me.

The film is really about growing up. Six films is really a long way for the cast, that is why you can see much of its maturity in the film. The film forces you to reconnect with the previous movies (particularly the first and second)so as to remind you how the series had evolved since its beginnings. As if it had been done deliberately to prepare you for the final chapter, The Deathly Hallows coming out the next year.

They said the book was the darkest and most emotional of all seven books. The film is no exception to that.

First of all, it's the acting that surprises you. Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) sheds his bully persona as we normally see in the previous films to reveal a tortured soul that is clearly showing personal conflict between life and duty inside. What else can we say about Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley), finally gained more screen time than the earlier films, is now a powerful character that forces its way into the roster of main characters. I don't know if this is just me, but why do I sense a bit of the late Richard Harris in Dumbledore? I'm not saying Michael Gambon didn't make an original portrayal. Maybe it is the direction where we are treated to the spirit of the former Dumbledore for nostalgic effect.

The film really captured the different genres that surrounds this film. But what most people did not expect is its horror aspect. Terrifying in fact it is surprising that it is in a PG film. However, the romance plays its powerful part in the film. Yes, romance is the driving plot of the film.

Warming up, are we?

My favorite part of the review: the direction. David Yates's induction into the roster of Harry Potter directors makes him the perfect choice. In fact, maybe agree that Yates's style in his direction (as seen in Order of the Phoenix, remember that final battle? Woosh!) makes him the most prominent director in the series and of course, we want to see more of his work in the next addition, The Deathly Hallows.

What about the writing? Steve Kloves returns in the writers helm, creating a screenplay that pretty much sticks out from his earlier Harry Potter films, introducing a more thematic and emotional screenplay. Even in the beginning we are already treated with an idea of what the film will be like, like for example the film begins with Harry leaving the Ministry of Magic after the tragic loss of his godfather which introduces the emotional aspect of the film while later the scene where Harry is first seen in a Cafe talking to a waitress introduces the romance and adolescent aspects. Ok, you might think this is a pretty heavy movie. Well the comedic scenes tend to lighten up the emotional load. It does not forget the fact that this is meant to be a film enjoyed by all ages.

It was Luna Lovegood, not Tonks that saves Harry in the train.

For the pessimistic film-goers, if you had the read the book you might feel some of it should have been included into the film. But I tell you what, only if you are a diehard, must be true to the book, fanatic then I guess you might feel disappointed (in fact, you shouldn't start on watching the films if you're like that). I guess that scenes from the book missing in the film are, how do you say this.. fleshed out in new ways. Although, there are some aspects that tend to leave you questioning if you had not read the book. In my opinion, I hope when the DVD gets out they'd fill it with deleted scenes that might help a bit.

Some flashbacks of Tom Riddle were omitted, so you get the important bits only. "Dumbledore: Did I know that I just met the most dangerous dark wizard of all time? No." Aww, come on! That's Ralph Fiennes's nephew there! Don't you think he looks creepy enough??

Overall, the theme of romance and adolescence along with magic and fantasy created this film the most exciting in the series. The film is written and directed expertly which may well be the best Harry Potter film in the series.

My rating: 4.5 out of 5

Oh yes, Quidditch returns. How can not forget the intensity and the sportsmanship of Quidditch? But I have to be sorry, Harry, your time to shine really flew with the snitch. Ron is now the blazing Quidditch player.

Oh gee, Harry. I never thought I'd be here like this if it weren't for wizard sidekick gym. (Well, he does look muscular.)

District 9

Aliens and Genocide, in some way does fit well with each other. But what if Aliens came to our planet and, while we wait for technological advancement or interplanetary war, they are confined to slum-like conditions, and worst of all, are not welcome? A story with a message obviously. Apartheid with a twist.

What got me pulled to the film is the documentary style in its portrayal. The setting is also one to pull people. Not many get to see how life is like in Johannesburg, South Africa on screen so I think this is one good opportunity to catch an awesome sci-fi action film and consider a new place to explore.

I heard this film started off with a short film called 'Alive in Joberg' by the same director, which I guess impressed Peter Jackson so much to produce it. You know, comparing both the short film and trailer 2, it looks as if it got a pretty badass makeover. So definitely, I'm catching this one on August 14th this year.

Nacho Libre

Sunday, May 24, 2009
Went through youtube looking for some inspirational music. That's right, like the Rocky theme. It always highlights my imagination when running on a flight of stairs. Then I remembered Nacho Libre, a good film but real silly, and the theme song went on replay in my head.

Maybe what really touched me about this song is that it played at the right moment of the film. I mean, at first it was really annoying throughout the film and that time I thought it sucked. I guess what really gave it its magic was the end of the final wrestling match when after all the losses Nacho went through, he actually won against the best wrestler in Mexico. The song had no value until that very moment. It felt like Rocky really did win the boxing match (No, Sly stallone is not in the film). The song was the perfect victory song for Nacho Libre.

I am I am, I am I am
I think I am I think I am
I'm glad I am
I'm proud I am
A real religious man

As I realized
The mightiest friend
Can separate
A chance from fate
Cause you have all I need to take
That's why I think I am I am
(whoa)

Cause I have prayed I just behave
Cause saints and sinners
Are quite the same
Cause it's my temple
The whole wide world
That's why I think I am I am

I am I am, I am I am
Think I am
I think I am
I'm proud I am

I pray I am
I feel I am
Oh Lord I am

Another animated film that needs to be seen. It could be one CGI film targetted for adults. Well, that's the rumor but maybe they'll put up PG-13 maybe (like The Incredibles). This film is actually made after a short film that pretty much impressed alot of people. Particularly Tim Burton (Nightmare before Christmas) and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted). Burton called the animation "Hauntingly beautiful" and with the original director Shane Acker in the director's helm, this might be an explosive film for September.

Humans have reached the pinnacle of their achievement which, inevitably, becomes their end. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where humans now cease to exist and it is now occupied by machines. With the exception of ragdolls. These ragdolls are the living beings on earth but are scattered and hunted by these machines. Being the last of those created by humans, 9 displays leadership qualities that will lead the other ragdolls for their survival. In turn, they have awakened something that has yet to be revealed and it is 9's responsibility to protect the future.

Here is the short film that the film is based on. Quite interesting and sad and beautifully rendered. Have fun and if you are wondering what the song is in the trailer, it is "Welcome Home" by Coheed and Cambria. I took the liberty to put the song below. Enjoy ^^

Great outing today and had lots of fun. We watched Knowing in the cinema; me, Zani, Aira and our cousin Hafiz. Since it got into the Number 1 position in the Amrican Box Office I said why not watch it while we wait for Monsters vs Aliens?

The Knowing has strong writing and direction. One moment it is a family drama, next thing you know, BOOM! It's Cloverfield again. The film gets you thinking all the way until you reach the climax then it stretches to a bright ending, which is great because the whole movie is pretty dark. Your mind will wonder and wonder whether is it about ghost, aliens, or Divine Intervention. It's the kind of Thriller that equals to Eagle Eye, only the part that spoils the film doesn't happen in the middle. You might have different opinions about the ending but from my opinion, I can only praise the direction and the writing since it holds hand to hand on all of this. Great Job Mr. Proyas! *4 out of 5*

GH: Metallica is here!

We spent most of our time before the film at Rainforest Cyber Cafe and killed undead in Left 4 dead. It was intense and awesome, I think I got addicted to killing Tanks bwhahaha! And because it is two days until School reopens, most of Gading is packed. Just walking and I could see familiar faces everywhere.

Faz, Ezat, Wann, Ashraf, Yean, Nis, Izah James, Dye, Ayun, Wafi, Fina, Gmiee, Ariffin, some Rugby Rivals, a few classmates, Khairul Anuar, Wapy, Jess, Diana, Shirley, Wajidun, ugh.. the list goes on!

Beach day tomorrow. Happy Birthday Jordine!

Where The Wild Things Are

There is one in all of us. As soon as I saw the photo stills of the film in IMDB, I had to see the trailer. Years ago while I was living in Selayun I always went to the HuaHo close by and everytime, I went straight to the toys section. I usually skip a shelf with the creepy toys. The toys being models of monsters from Where The Wild Things Are. To my understanding then, they came from a children's book. They looked so weird, I thought they must be kidding. That was almost a decade ago. I look at them now and still feel a bit nostalgic.

This is the first time I saw a fantasy story depicted like an independent film. It's not like Harry Potter or Lord of The Rings. The main focus is the world and you can feel the width of it from just watching it. The mind of a child is definitely a powerful thing. Animatronics always intrigue me because they always make it feel realistic. CGI was used on the monsters expressions, or else it'll be just furry men in suits. In my opinion, this is how creatures should be portrayed in film. Magical but tangible. I have never felt so touched by a movie trailer since I saw Children of Men.

Astro Boy

Tuesday, February 17, 2009
Why didn't I catch this! It's been around in the net all this time and missed the news of one great film! What film you might ask? A CG film of one of the greatest anime of all time, one that had entertained the children that became your parents. That's right Dad, they are bringing back Astro Boy.

I remember Dad would tell me stories when he was younger where children gather inside his house (because televisions were brand new in Brunei then) most of the time to catch Astro Boy. That being Dad's favorite cartoon, Astro Boy had left many in awe and excitement. Without Astro Boy, there wouldn't be mecha cartoons today. No Gundam, No Terminator, and No transformers.

Beautifully rendered CGI of the modern Astro Boy, unchanged from his classic look!

So it's up to you, can an Anime franchise still be popular at its transition to a US CGI animated film? Can the big name cast of Kristen Bell, Nicholas Cage, Bill Nighy, Donald Sutherland, and Freddie Highmore as Astro Boy himself, make this movie big? I say with the popularity of Anime still booming, the mecha genre never failing, your parent's favorite past times still vivid, and as a fanboy at heart, yes. It shall be ASTRONOMICAL!

The very blueprints drawn by the legendary Osamu Tezuka himself.

A classic pose that lasted years, Astro Boy soaring into the sky!

A powerful image of a cornered Astro Boy still in his pajamas. Fans know, they wouldn't stand a chance!

Watchmen Premier : 2009 Resolution #1

Sunday, February 8, 2009
Watch Watchmen in its premier at midnight. Though the premier will be on the 6th of March, I'm already asking Fae and everyone a month in advance to join me. Diary organizer is checked and written in bold. Now I've said this too many times, Watchmen is very important to me and being a die hard fan of the Graphic Novel how can I miss it?

Watchmen - trailer #3 HD
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXRdlOvLNeo

Ok, I know it's kind of late for making new year resolutions. Let's say this is one of the few things I want to pull off this year. A midnight movie with friends and a movie I am going crazy anticipating. It's like when 300 came out, only this is bigger. Go update your calendars and mark 6th of March! Woohoo!

I Can Wait Forever

With eager anticipation, I'm looking forward to watching LaMB in Animax soon. The story where recycling criminals can make the world better got me hooked. It's like a question of morality. Now add super awesome action with fantastic visuals. I will definitely try catch it once it's premiered.

At first I got really nervous with Simple Plan getting a song in the anime but after listening to "I Can Wait Forever" I saw a big change from their earlier songs and well, I have some respect for those canadians. Apparently better than their *urgh* "Perfect" single. (Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_TJxL3nYgA)

I Can Wait Forever
Simple Plan

You look so beautiful today
When you're sitting there it's hard for me to look away
So I try to find the words that I could say
I know distance doesn't matter
But you feel so far away
And I can't lie
But everytime I leave my heart turns grey
And I, I wanna come back home to see your face tonight...

Cause I just can't take it
Another day without you with me
Is like a blade that cuts right through me
I can wait, I can wait forever
When you call my heart stops beating
When you're gone it won't stop bleeding
I can wait, I can wait forever...

You look so beautiful today
It's like everytime I turn around I see your face
The thing I miss the most is waking up next to you
When I look into your eyes, man, I wish that I could stay
And I can't lie, but everytime I leave my heart turns grey
And I, I wanna come back home to see your face tonight...

Cause I just can't take it
Another day without you with me
Is like a blade that cuts right through me
I can wait, I can wait.. I can wait forever
When you call my heart stops beating
When you're gone it won't stop bleeding
I can wait, I can wait.. I can wait forever...

I know it feels like forever
I guess thats just a price I've gotta pay
But when I come back home to feel your touch makes it better
'Til that day there's nothing else I can do

And I just can take it
(Just can't take it)
Another day without you with me
Is like a blade that cuts right through me
I can wait, I can wait.. I can wait forever
When you come my heart stops beating
When you're gone it won't stop bleeding
I can wait, I can wait.. I can wait forever...

I can wait forever
I can wait forever
I can wait forever
I can wait forever
I can wait forever...

Movie Mania Baby!

Tuesday, February 3, 2009
It's the Superbowl so there has to be some cool trailers. This year is amazing, we got a new Pixar flick, a second installment to the DaVinci Code and favourite TV past times! They all look amazing so I'm gonna put it up as a Top 5. Are you ready? GO!

5.
UP. A man pulls his house from its roots and into the skies with thousands of balloons! Now this is what you call Suspension of Disbelief ^^ (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I789Pr5wLUc)

4.
Angels and Demons.
Tom Hanks returns as Robert Langdon in another conspiracy involving the Vatican Church. Ewan McGregor is also on film! Although it looks like a sequel than a prequel (I read the book), and Tom Hanks cut his hair, finally! (Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9TnRZ5_a9E)

3.
Star Trek.
Some fantastic visuals for the SciFi classic remake! It looked amazingly epic and the cast are like the younger selves of the original TV cast.(Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wXAFio-LLw)

2.
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
Will you look at Destro and Baroness? This is definitely big explosive action! The TV theme song is still humming in my head and the way those ninjas crash through everything and dodge missles? WOW!(Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-p9yV1G-cKE)

1.
Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen.
More and more robot action and ready to kick ass! This one is pretty intense and there seems to be much larger robots! I can't wait to recognize which Transformer has finally appeared. Maybe the dinobots? (Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNTj_WPDqYM)

You know how crazy I am when it comes to the Summer film-fest! There is still Watchmen or Harry Potter but the numbers of cool films here will dry our wallets. So see you soon in the cinemas because I'll be there to catch the action!

X men Origins: Wolverine trailer released!

Thursday, December 18, 2008
Hugh Jackman returns with his sideburns in another mutant epic. I caught the first look in E! channel last night and I had to go look at it again. First of all, not only we have Wolverine as the main character, we have the whole Weapon X members in the team! Yes, I'm a diehard comic book fan and I can tell that they included even Maverick to Silver fox in here. They even included the Blob and Gambit.

Known mutants from what I can tell
0:40 - Ryan Reynolds as DeadPool
0:41 - Will.I.Am as Kestrel
0:42 - Lynn Collins as Silver Fox
1:12 - Daniel Henney as David North (aka Maverick
1.31 - Taylor Kitsch as Gambit
1:51 - Kevin Durand as The Blob
1:57 - This one's tricky.. Emma Frost?
2:13 - My absolute fave, Liev Schreiber as Sabertooth

Twilight Argument in Amal's Facebook profile : part 2

Saturday, December 13, 2008
Eager to see Amal's reaction in Facebook, the result was hilarious! I'm now aware of Robert Pattinson 'diciples' in the social network, seeing that Amal is the hardcore fan.

Amal Arashi at 8:48am December 13
WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU PEOPLE DOING?! HAHA. I WAS SHOCKED TO MY CORE SEEING THE NUMBER OF NOTIFICATIONS! -.-'and all this started with an "ugh"... =__='

Amal Arashi at 8:50am December 13
Azzi, DON'T YOU DARE MOCK MY EDWARD! hahahahahahahahaha. Let us girls dream like what Nadine said, boys would NOT understand that :P and sure, I'll go watch Twilight with you guys next week, duit sendiri. Hahahahahaha :P

Amal Arashi at 8:54am December 13
Nina, how did it turn out this way? Kamu ani ahhhhh, banar tahh. -__-' we go watch Twilight next week then, and yknow what? I was still wide awake until 3 am tadi, after balik from Cineplex. The movie was playing in my head!!! So, I couldn't sleep. Haha.

Amal Arashi at 8:57am December 13
Nadine, so you're best friends with my sister now? Haha. Good for you guys :P And yes, I was nuts when I saw the number of notifications. & oh, I suggest you to read the book afterwards, because to me the movie was a tad bit disappointing. XD

Amal Arashi at 9:01am December 13
Bubu, i see you're also participating in this... status comment thing. -.- and yes, you are right. NEVER EVER go AGAINST Edward Cullen, if Team Edward hears that, i think they'll have the capability to kill whoever the person is. Hahahahaha. I am in Team Edward also, so beware! :P

Azzi Latif at 12:11pm December 13
again, "Ugh"

Twilight Argument in Amal's Facebook profile : part 1

Friday, December 12, 2008
Amal will definitely freak out once she checks out her Facebook notifications, only to find 30+ of them from her status responses. Like what Abu said, the arguement all started with one word, "Ugh". Then it becomes a debate whether Twilight is worth watching and why men should not watch it.

While I try to get Nina to watch Twilight with me (so I wouldn't lose *macho points*), Nadine continues to argue for the film. Abu tags along and it becomes a 3 vs 1 battle debate, only to realise we are pitting at each other in Amal's social profile page. Hehehe, ehe beauty of social networks ^^

Amal says, "Edward Cullen is dazzlingly HOT!!"

Klau nina kan bawa aku liat twilight , boleh ^^ I dun wanna watch it myself, krg hilang "Macho points". hahaha.

And Nadine, the book is too narrow in my opinion. It's like only tween and young adult girls could understand the book, obviously because I can't. I don't think the movie can wipe out the "cheesiness" (There, I said it. Now I'm the number #1 enemy of girls globally.

Nadine Yaani at 11:14pm December 12

Top 5 Favourite Cartoon TV show intros

Wednesday, November 26, 2008
Nostalgic, ain't it? All of these shows have turned into films lately and I thought back how their respective TV shows have catchy tunes, so catchy in fact you remember them even now.

5
Batman
The Animated Series is well known for challenging the very stereotype of cartoon heroes. There are not many shows that have the same gritty and dark atmosphere, almost limiting itself children, like Batman. The intro theme is a perfect reminder to the revered cartoon show.

4
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
How is it that you get a lame name for a cartoon and make the name so catchy just by singing the title 3 times? TMNT of course is one of our favourite cartoons and I remember whenever I catch an episode I would put my Michaelangelo mask on. Ah..yes, best memories.

3
Transformers Season 2
I remember whistling to the theme while I was waiting to watch the film. The season 2 theme song was memorable because it has beat, very catchy, real heroic in a way and it does not sound like robots singing (season 1). The song is stuck in my head for ages!

2
X-Men
Once, I believed no other cartoon can beat the X-men. Whether it's superman or spiderman, no one can beat the X-men. Whenever the theme song plays on television, it's like a quick jolt in my ears where I will come running to catch one of its episodes. Plus, it makes a really cool ringtone ^^

1
GI Joe
Ok, why no.1? It just so happens the song rings in my ears almost forever! First of all, it's like the Ultimate patriot song with an awesome 80s feel to it. It's funny, almost laughable, but you got to admit it was memorable. You could feel they are winning, I mean they are throwing Cobra and Destro about!

I bet if you watched the TV series years ago, then watch the Live-Action film years later, I bet the first thing that pop in your head is the theme song. Batman saw Six films with the Dark Knight being the greatest of them, TMNT saw Four films including the CG film, Transformers was recently released last year with its sequel coming in 2009 (that's right, summer next year!) and X-men already saw a Trilogy with the prequel, X-men Origin: Wolverines releasing on May 2009 (woot!).

All of them were made into films with the exception of GI JOE... oh, wait. I forgot ^^

Madagascar : Escape 2 Africa

We are treated again with the funniest animals around. Catch Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Gloria the Hippo, and Melman the Giraffe in another hilarious adventure in Africa.

This film explores deeper into the theme of identity and boundaries. Melman is attracted to Gloria and Marty has no difficulty fitting in his kinds but the fact that they are all similiar (bloody sound the same!) takes a toll on the Zebra. Meanwhile, the central plot is when Alex returns to his pride. Will the King of New York be able to follow his father's footsteps?

The film brings back the same cast from the original with the addition of some big names like Alec Baldwin, the late Bernie Mac and Will.I.Am. Bernie Mac's character Zuba was very realistic when it comes to being the Alpha male and is always interrupted by his wife. Will.I.Am's character MotoMoto as well caught some fire (not literally!). But I have to say the scene stealer is got to be the Penguins. Their act is almost satirical and very impressive. I agree with everyone that they deserve a spin-off.

Overall, the whole film is the funniest I've seen lately. It is definitely not inferior to the first film, instead it was balanced and carried forward the same charm and comedy that everyone loves.

Quantum of Solace

Is James Bond back? I doubt so. After being mesmerized by the slick style of Casino Royale, I was excited to catch the film. However, despite being the sequel to one of the best spy films I've seen, it was just another action flick. No style.

It was just mindless! It didn't feel like a Bond film and it would have been no different if Vin Diesel played as Bond in the film. Don't get me wrong, Daniel Craig still had his new Bond charm but this emo look is too much.

Just Fields. (Who would call themselves Strawberry? No wonder you didn't say it..)

My biggest complaint was the lack of a recognizable foe. No bleeding eye, no iron teeth. All I see is short man and a Military General bent on domination. That my friends is too cliche. I'd rather have the eye bleeding gambler come back to life.

One particular scene, however, stands out from the rest of the film. Referenced as the Oilfinger scene, it is a homage to the older Bond film and honestly, this is the only scene that felt truly Bond.

Again, I'm talking about the Watchmen. It has been 3 months since I wrote about the first trailer. There's some new footage of the film and it proves Zack Snyder true, that he'd make the film as true to the comic as possible (like he did with 300, but how true will it be? Will he add another subplot?)

The Comedian, Ozymandias, Nite Owl, Silk Spectre and Rorsharch.

There is a new trailer released and I can make out all of the scenes in the trailer from the comic book. Neat huh? Really, this comic is the best among all comic books!

Keep watching to see the Twilight trailer ^^

Let's see if I can remember the scenes right. If Zack Snyder copied the film page by page, then it's like watching the movie already!

HEAR BE SPOILERS!

0:21 - Manhattan and Laurie/Silk Spectre after the destruction
0:24 - Manhattan came to being
0:36 - Rorsharch after the murder
0:42 - The police riots before the ban.
0:49 - The Comedian when the US 'won' the Vietnam War
1:03 - Dan Dreiberg/Nite Owl gets it on with Laurie Juspeczyk/Silk Spectre. O_O
1:08 - Manhattan, the reason for winning the Vietnam War
1:16 - Laurie Juspeczyk in disbelief after she hears the truth
1:20 - Manhattan crashing through the Antarctic base.
1:30 - The murder that started it all.

What else? Watch the movie coming out next year!
