Winning Wednesdays with Food

Wednesday, April 8, 2009
Went out to have lunch with Aira and Zani. After picking up Aira from PTE Katok, we decided to spend our time in Gadong since Zani needed to print up some passport photos for his visit to the MOE. Walking to the photo shop I met a familiar face, well on photo. I thought they would pull Arif's picture down but atleast his face will now be recognized by the hundreds of ladies who are now falling for his charm as we speak. Good for you Reeve!

Arif, when I say you'll be surrounded by women someday with camera's chasing you everywhere, I didn't mean it this literally.

We went to where our stomach leads us. In Ideal Cafe and Restaurant, to be precise, which homes the very delicious and highly craved-for Cheesy Fries. Hehehe, anyway. We had this discussion whether Ideal, despite titling itself as 'Cafe & Grill', can be considered a Fast Food restaurant. They sell Fries, Chicken, Spaghetti and Sodas over the counter; Serve it like we're in a fast food restaurant; and those working there are in uniform which are similar to other Fast Food restaurants.

Cheese Fries...YUMMY!

"Well Zani," I started. "They serve Spaghetti fresh, compared to the sloppy yet apparently flavorful Jollibee Spaghetti. Secondly, the Chicken here is grilled and it takes much longer to grill chicken than to fry them. Last but not least, the customer service here are nice ^^ ". No offense to the rest. I love Kentucky Fried Chicken, McD Fries and Jolly Beef Burgers with that secret special sauce which is obviously ######## ###### sauce, can't fool me ^^.

It's still Halo halo you know?

Of course, after lunch, craving for dessert is inevitable so we went to Jollibee for to buy some Creamy Kaya(I was then already tasting Creamy Kaya in my mouth, yum!). I wondered then why they changed the name from its original title Halo-Halo? Did they change it to Creamy Kaya to better suit the malay community from trying out a dessert unfamiliar to them? I say its a good marketing strategy by introducing the same product with a more malay tasty name. I mean who doesn't like Kaya?

Bread Pudding

Friday, December 5, 2008
Spending the whole day watching Asian Food Channel does provide some inspiration. I was watching Chef at Home (the way the guy talks to the screen.. O_o) and he was making bread pudding for his son on a gloomy day. I really wanted to make something for a rainy day for everyone and today was especially cloudy. I was also eager to pull myself away from the frying pan and grill and explore the oven for the first time. Sounds like an adventure!

Voila! My first Bread Pudding and already a favourite ^^

The way the guy in television told the audience how to make it was surprsingly simple. Ready for the recipe? Go!

Dry the bread to absorb the pudding
+ Heat the oven to a 170 Degree Celsius.
+ Cut bread into small pieces (I used four slices today, cut each of them in 6 even slices)
+ Place them inside the oven on the pan until its crisp and toasted.

Time to make the pudding!
+ Remember: 1 cup of milk = 1 egg = 1/4 cup of sugar
Today, I used 3 cups of Milk.
+ Whisk it all up and don't forget to add a Splash of Vanilla
+ And for some of your personal touch, you can add your spices for flavour. I used Cinnamon and Nutmeg in the mix ^^ (let your imagination go wild, what about Cardamum or Clove?)
+ Keep whisking until it's all mixed ^^

What to do once your Bread is toasted?
+ Mix it and stir it in a bowl and let the bread absorb the sweet tasty pudding

Oven-time!
+ Be sure you have the Oven at 170 Degree Celsius
+ Put your pudding and bread mix in an oven resistant bowl and put it in for 30-40 minutes. Heat top and bottom ^^

And "KA-CHING!"
+ Check the pudding by poking the center with a stick. If it's clean, it's chow time!
+ What are you waiting for? Let's make one in your kitchen!

A snack or desert, perfect for any cool rainy day indoors.

Currywurst

Saturday, September 20, 2008
Today's recipe is a German favourite! Currywurst in Germany is like Hotdogs in the US. After reading an article on its popularity, I could not help but try to savor this unique meal. So I grabbed a recipe and fixed it up during Sahur.

Currywurst galore!

First you make the tomato sauce. I personally made it with chili in it and some garlic and onions for the aroma. I added some water to lighten it up. While you heat up the sauce, fry your sausages. Once they are done, cut them into pieces of your choosing. I would cut around 2 cm. Arrange them in a bowl.

Pour the sauce to cover the sausages. Then the MOST IMPORTANT part:
Powder it up with curry! WOOT! Use a strainer to make it even.

As you can see from the top, I snowed out with the curry ^_^ yay!

Cheese Rolls! Ziggy Style!

Friday, September 12, 2008
My food comes from my dreams, believe it or not. That's how I learned to make my fried rice, combining the salty oyster sauce with chili to create a unique sweet and sour taste then cooking it until the rice becomes beautifully red.

Days ago, Ladies and Gentlemean, I dreamt of a new recipe.. CHEESE ROLLS!

All you need is butter, honey, soft bread, and cheese slices ^_^

First, spread the butter (or margerine) on the bread lightly. I use Lof bread coz it's soft and large enough.

After that, spread the honey on top of the butter. Thsi way the honey doesn't seep into the bread, therefore stays inside to mix with the cheese.

Add the cheese! Fold the bottom edge of the bread with the cheese slice, then roll!

Voila! A cheese roll! What's next?

Make more ^_^ You can leave it in the fridge, or you can toast it in the oven and enjoy cheese galore.

It's pretty simple. The honey and cheese was an odd mix but it really is good ^_^.
