Brought my guitar to school today because I felt like it. I asked Jeff if we could have the Music Club meetings on Wednesday (since Rugby training is moved to Thursdays).
The school felt empty in Block 3 every Wednesday before the juniors came in. Nothing much to do in the afternoon, maybe that's why I brought my guitar.
I had to explain to Jeff and Wiseman why the intro riff in Smoke on the Water is a popular favourite. Its power is in fact on the riffs simplicity and its timelessness. My long lecture cut short when Wiseman left.
So I sat with Jeff and talked about how The Beatles are a force not to be reckon with. Using Helter Skelter for example, note how McCartney choose his words in the intro. He stresses "get", "back" and "top" and uses it to surround the song with an angry overtone that also uses a roller coaster ride as a metaphor.
You know that part?
"When I GET to the bottom I go BACK to the TOP of the slide"
Then we talked about ranking the bands, putting The Beatles in the number one position and Pink Floyd in the second, followed by the Rolling Stones.
We discussed whether Nirvana should be number four but I told him I'd rank them on number five, putting the number four position in mystery.
I felt like playing The Beatles so I grabbed my guitar and played Across the Universe, my overall favourite.
When I started singing, there was this group of girls sitting in another table not far from us watching me. Well, I did enjoy the attention.
So after some more boring talk with Jeff, I began singing Hey Jude. One of the girls kept looking at me but when I looked back, she just smiled and turned back to her friends.
Big compliment.
