Rugby Days Forever

Thursday, April 30, 2009
April is the month of blooming glory. Trembling from afar, battle drums march across fields. Cries for war erupted from the lungs of men and the sheer sound of it tore the sky in to glass pieces. There will be no fear except the fear that we put onto others. There will be no respite but the respite of victory. The sun is merciless but the men see far. The rain is a slippery but the men fight in shades. It's Rugby season again, and the warriors are hungry for battle.

Religious references in Blankets

Monday, April 13, 2009
Something I found out in a review. I combined both pages to form one image to illustrate a point. I remember in the book Craig and Raina discuss religion and philosophy while alone in their room. Raina tells Craig that, "You know, sometimes you look at me with longing... even though I'm here with you."

The mirror style of the presentation fits the intimate moment between the two. However, the different images inside the frames portray a reference to Adam and Eve. Craig discusses Lust while a hand reaches down towards the page directing to Raina. Inside the frame, Craig takes the role as Adam surrounded by demonic forces which includes a pervert from his previous memories. In the next page, however, Raina discusses Temptation while a drawing of a hand is presenting an apple towards Craig who is seated in the upper part of the page. The image inside the frame is Raina in the role of Eve with the Forbidden tree in the background.

I see it as fitting to the honesty that the two show about their relationship. Though throughout the story we are unsure about Raina's future after the graphic novel ends, we see this as a development in the way we interpret Raina's character. Nevertheless, this is one of the most intimate discussions that two shared.

Oh yeah, the next line in the next page:
"That I might want you even more".

Winning Wednesdays with Food

Wednesday, April 8, 2009
Went out to have lunch with Aira and Zani. After picking up Aira from PTE Katok, we decided to spend our time in Gadong since Zani needed to print up some passport photos for his visit to the MOE. Walking to the photo shop I met a familiar face, well on photo. I thought they would pull Arif's picture down but atleast his face will now be recognized by the hundreds of ladies who are now falling for his charm as we speak. Good for you Reeve!

Arif, when I say you'll be surrounded by women someday with camera's chasing you everywhere, I didn't mean it this literally.

We went to where our stomach leads us. In Ideal Cafe and Restaurant, to be precise, which homes the very delicious and highly craved-for Cheesy Fries. Hehehe, anyway. We had this discussion whether Ideal, despite titling itself as 'Cafe & Grill', can be considered a Fast Food restaurant. They sell Fries, Chicken, Spaghetti and Sodas over the counter; Serve it like we're in a fast food restaurant; and those working there are in uniform which are similar to other Fast Food restaurants.

Cheese Fries...YUMMY!

"Well Zani," I started. "They serve Spaghetti fresh, compared to the sloppy yet apparently flavorful Jollibee Spaghetti. Secondly, the Chicken here is grilled and it takes much longer to grill chicken than to fry them. Last but not least, the customer service here are nice ^^ ". No offense to the rest. I love Kentucky Fried Chicken, McD Fries and Jolly Beef Burgers with that secret special sauce which is obviously ######## ###### sauce, can't fool me ^^.

It's still Halo halo you know?

Of course, after lunch, craving for dessert is inevitable so we went to Jollibee for to buy some Creamy Kaya(I was then already tasting Creamy Kaya in my mouth, yum!). I wondered then why they changed the name from its original title Halo-Halo? Did they change it to Creamy Kaya to better suit the malay community from trying out a dessert unfamiliar to them? I say its a good marketing strategy by introducing the same product with a more malay tasty name. I mean who doesn't like Kaya?

Like many Sundays

Sunday, April 5, 2009
It's a good Sunday. One of the many. After sending Aira to the Rimba Carnival, I felt like going to the Mall and meet up with Ash. I get to see a lot of friends in The Mall on Weekends and Sundays are usually the best time to meet them. I mean considering the schedule I have: Tuesdays and Thursdays are for training, Fridays are for work, Saturdays are some quality time with mom at home and Sundays are mostly outings with friends or family. Cross out Mondays now, I got a new Form 4 student to teach for English Literature O level (finally! Some thing I'm really good at). Below are some pics I took while I was out:

IN YOUR FACE, WALL-E!

Caught Fae and Keem at Cheezebox while hanging out with Ash.

"If I squint my eyes like this, I can shoot lasers! ZOOOOM!"

Woah, candid!

Look up and it's my handsome looks!

"Hi! I am THE SPAWN OF EVIL! What's your name?"

Wednesdays are free. Videogame party anyone? If this week is ok, bring some junk food and prepare to go at it in Soul Calibur IV!

Comics and Coffee

Another better way to start the day. I was wrapping my books not only to protect it from wear and tear and dust, but also to keep in good condition for, my mom's suggestion, my grand children. Good idea, I suppose.

I kept going through Watchmen, hoping to find some hidden clues that hint on the overall theme of the story. The fun part is finding the meaning in one particular symbol: The blood stained smiley. One idea pops into mind of course, the death of The Comedian. If The Comedian stands as the parody of the the growing violent behaviour of the American people, the smiley (which is his icon for his superhero persona) can mean the death of the Golden Era of comic books. It means Superheroes today are far darker and bleaker the happier days of the 50s when Superman was a celebratory American hero and Batman is merely a dark figure with a heart of gold. 'All of this is joke,' is one iconic phrase of The Comedian. Imagine if we do have superheroes hanging about in reality, are they our protection, or our threat?

Happy 49th Birthday to Dad

Saturday, April 4, 2009
We tend to see age like fine wine. We grow wiser and finer as the years past, and this is especially true for my dad. Of course, the very mention of the number 49 might have him claw his grey head with anxiety but the truth is we know how to age gracefully.

Here is to Dad, who is fortunate enough to see his daughter turn 20 in Japan, his sons grow facial hair and his genius youngest daughter gain prizes. It's a celebration tonight!

Frog in my shoe! The 400th Post

I dedicate this 400th post to a startling predicament. Not only did it give me a jump, but it made me question about life in terms of a frog in a shoe. Did my leaving the shoes out have given a poor innocent creature a place to shelter? Alright, I'm kidding! NO serious talk today. Just some babble how I felt something squishy and soft with the tips of my toes.

It just jumped off as soon as I shook the shoe.

I shall name thee Beelzebub. Lord of the Flies!

I let it live of course. What use is it if I kill it if all it does is jump into places smaller than him? Either way, I would be late for Rugby training. Next day is time to work at the tuition school, got two new students coming in and this time I will be focusing on Narrative writing. See you everybody ^^

Watchmen ...again, only this time its on my hands!

Wednesday, April 1, 2009
A BIG Thank You to mom for getting me Watchmen from Amazon (big kisses ^^). Yes, the graphic novel. Now you heard me say I love reading it and it is my awesome favourite next to Blankets (which I will keep gladly say it's still close to my heart). Well, to tell you truth I had it only in digital form (reading it in pdf format) and it does hurt my eyes searching for some intriguing symbols including reading the written parts. It's the same with Blankets and naturally, the experience of reading the book and reading it in digital form greatly differ. A book should be read as a book and I tell you, reading the book is a more fun experience.

The cover is spell binding!

The first chapter. Those who have seen the film might notice the similarities.

Graphic Novels are always interesting to read. It's a comic book, but you read it like a novel.

The drawings are clean and not as grainy as its pdf form which fits with the new look on today's comics. It just proves that Watchmen will always be timeless. If you read on the back of the book, it says, "A WORK OF RUTHLESS PSYCHOLOGICAL REALISM, IT'S A LANDMARK IN THE GRAPHIC NOVEL MEDIUM." - One of TIME MAGAZINE's 100 Best English-Language Novels since 1923. It is truly a masterful work of art and a great addition to my Graphic Novel collection. Which now includes:

V for Vendetta by Alan Moore and David Lloyd
Blankets by Craig Thompson
To The Heart of the Storm by Will Eisner
300 by Frank Miller
History of Violence by John Wagner and Vincent Locke
..and now finally
Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons

The next Graphic Novel, I will try, will be from my pocket. Maybe I'll order it sometime, maybe in the next year because, seriously, it's like an addiction. I do read other novels (which are gladly placed in the library with other great books I own). Next to aim for? From Hell by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell, Wanted by Mark Millar and JG Jones, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller, and last but not released yet is Habibi by Craig Thompson whom I hope will finish the comic someday. Thank you Mom for everything ^^

April Fool's day Prank: Swiss Spaghetti Harvest

This one caught my eye in Yahoo! It's now the first of April and it is the first time on this day that I need not to look around like I'm paranoid. Well, I did have my share of making pranks (and being a victim of pranks). Maybe because it felt like another Wednesday, or the real fact stems from not being in school anymore. Anyway, check out the link below for the Top 5 April Fool's day prank.

Imagine that? Spaghetti growing on trees! I'd have one growing on my garden somewhere near the mangoes and we'll have mom's best spaghetti everyday! Yummy ^^ Have fun everyone! Don't pull a prank too hard or you'll send them crying. Don't do it to me especially (yikes!)

Another animated film that needs to be seen. It could be one CGI film targetted for adults. Well, that's the rumor but maybe they'll put up PG-13 maybe (like The Incredibles). This film is actually made after a short film that pretty much impressed alot of people. Particularly Tim Burton (Nightmare before Christmas) and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted). Burton called the animation "Hauntingly beautiful" and with the original director Shane Acker in the director's helm, this might be an explosive film for September.

Humans have reached the pinnacle of their achievement which, inevitably, becomes their end. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where humans now cease to exist and it is now occupied by machines. With the exception of ragdolls. These ragdolls are the living beings on earth but are scattered and hunted by these machines. Being the last of those created by humans, 9 displays leadership qualities that will lead the other ragdolls for their survival. In turn, they have awakened something that has yet to be revealed and it is 9's responsibility to protect the future.

Here is the short film that the film is based on. Quite interesting and sad and beautifully rendered. Have fun and if you are wondering what the song is in the trailer, it is "Welcome Home" by Coheed and Cambria. I took the liberty to put the song below. Enjoy ^^
