Is controversy the root of all change?
Think the Muhammad Caricatures.
Think The Holocaust.
Think The Bush administration
Think Homosexuality
Think Rodney King
Think Salman Rushdie's Satanic Verses
and lately, the teddy bear named Muhammad.
Events labeled Taboo had affected many lifestyles and societies.
RTB Dramas come to mind.
They touched on many subjects.
Drugs, Teenage pregnancy, Family problems, Teenagers, Education, Prejudice and the sorts.
But I wonder, have they touched on faith? Particularly the loss of Faith?
What about gang violence? Terrorism? Murder?
Racial and Religious Prejudice.
Corruption?
The Royal Family?
We are so afraid of pushing through the limits, we tend to crawl back in and pretend nothing happened.
Like for example, is there sex education courses in schools?
In SMR, the students were told to leave the hall when the teachers wanted to touch on children's discipline. Why? "Because we don't wanna give any ideas to the children" I thought we're being educated?
This will shock you, but I believe in Rebellion when it comes to unfair treatment.
In PTEB, a teacher threatened us when she said, "You'll be under the heat longer if you don't settle down"
Years ago in SMJA a student fainted over the same punishment.
Imagined if that got media attention? But no..
There is censorship, of course. Only a few got through.
Think about the story about teacher forcing a kid into a dustbin for being a smartass?
Or the primary four students commiting sexual activities in school?
If these things aren't reported, we would have been more careful with our children.
Like the 4-year old child kidnapping.
Children dead in our trash.
What has the world come to?
Do you know there are more sexual assault case than reported?
We think too much of our reputation, no matter the cost.

Hey Zi, I don't think I ever told you my cockroach theory!
If you see one crawling around, there's a nest hidden somewhere with thousands waiting.
The media is the person that spots the cockroach. And the cockroach? That's what people like to call crime, immoral behavious etc. But that's how media works. If you can report everything that happens in the world you'll need to reform the idea of 'newspaper'. You'd be printing Harry Potter-sized editions everyday! Even in a country as small as Brunei.
The media only shows that bad things DO happen. You've got to be smart to realize that there are more things than what can be seen. So what is the function of the media if it can't tell you exactly how many cockroaches there are in the nest?
Well, the problem is not to get more awareness about this pest problem, it's what to do about it next. A lot of people already know about this pest problem, but their reaction is still the same. Silence.
That reaction is not going to work in the world you and I are going to be adults in. It won't be enough. So the real problem becomes: what we'll be doing about it. Will it be Silence? or Extermination?
Because it's no use knowing and being an Intellectual if we don't do something about it. Because that's how Government function and we all know what a controversy that is.
Hahahah... I hope I gave you something more to think about.
